The Grand Masters of Science Fiction: Are They Actually Any Good?

There are a lot of metrics by which we can call an author great. Award nominations. award wins. Sales figures. Literary reputation. Influence on the genre. Starting in 1975, the SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association) began awarding the title of Grandmaster to selected author in the field of science fiction and fantasy. The award, while not given ever year, is still going today. It is one of genre fiction’s highest honours, shared by only forty people, and intended to recognise a significant career.

As I continue to read my way through the history of science fiction, I thought it might be interesting to run through the list and see how they stack up in my own experience. Clearly, these are authors who have done a lot of things very well. But if you’re reading this, it’s because you care about one man’s opinion.

It’s me. I am that man.

As you can see, I’m far from familiar with everyone on the Grandmasters list. I won’t comment on the fantasy author who have been appointed, but when it comes to science fiction, the SFWA know what they’re talking about. Pretty much everyone on the list is worth a look, and there are plenty that I need to read more of. And reading is exactly what I intend to do.

How did Harlan manage to earn a “No. No. No.” rating after 0 books? XD The only thing I’ve read by him was his original script for the ST Episode, City on the Edge of Forever. Quite different from ST…

I read one of his short stories (Repent Harlequin, I think) and it was absolutely dreadful. I might pick up Dangerous Visions for the history lesson, but the entire New Wave movement is a tough sell for me.
