Normally I start every month with a TBR & BEYOND, talking about the books I plan to read, and the articles I plan to post, in the coming month. For January, I’m going to do something a little different. The articles I have in mind are all long-term plans for the year, so I thought, why not start by posting my blogging and reading resolutions?
Articles
One of the things I’m very keen to do is get more articles written. Yes, this includes everybody’s favourite never-appearing series on Empires of Science Fiction, but I’m also planning standalone deeper dives into single authors, and looking at how different books tackle the same idea. It’ll be academic, but hopefully fun too.
Audiobooks
having finally caught up on podcasts, I can now finally give audiobooks the time they deserve. Thanks to Black Library and Star Wars, I’ve become an audiobook convert in recent years, and those two will definitely take up most of my listening time. I’m hoping to get to at least two audiobooks a month, based on my current listening time.
Community
Last year I launched the Boundary’s Edge Social Club on Discord (which you can join by clicking HERE). In 2024 I’m hoping to grow it a little. We’ll be doing our first ever buddy read this month, featuring A Canticle for Liebowitz by Walter M. Miller, and I have a few other fun things planned for the months ahead. I’ll also be looking to be a bit more active in the online community in general, so don’t be surprised if you see me around.
Diverse Books
For the past few years I’ve been stuck in a bit of a reading rut, favouring the same genres and publishers. There’s nothing wrong with what I’ve been reading, but I want to push those boundaries back a little and try to find something new out there that interests me. And should I fail, I’ll always have the old favourites to fall back on.
Interviews
I love talking to authors, but (for a number of reasons) my interviewing plans never fully materialised last year. I’m planning to change that in 2024 and be more proactive in seeking out interviewees. Hopefully there’ll be some news on this front very soon.
Logo
Look, I love my bookshelves as much as the next nerd, but the problem is that they’re ever-changing. Any photo is out of date as soon as I add a new book to my hoard. With that in mind, this year I’m toying with the idea of a proper site logo to keep things nice and tidy across all platforms.
New Authors
I don’t tend to read a lot of debuts. Most of my reading is a) tie-ins, b) ongoing series, and c) older works. I want to shake that up this year and stay a bit more in tune with modern publishing. After all, my favourites were all debuts once. It’s the one thing all authors have in common. I’m looking forward to getting in on the ground level for the next big thing.
Older Books
Finances are, alas, a real thing, and one of the simplest ways to cut corners is to but more books second hand. This sort of clashes with the previous ambition, but I’m hoping to pick up more books on the used market. If nothing else, it will free up cash for those newer releases.
WarhamMarch
WarhamMarch will be back in its usual slot this year (and yes, I am still kicking myself for having WarhamMay not Warhammer40May last year). I hesitate to use the phrase ‘bigger and better than ever’ but I have a cunning plan to make sure it’s more chock full of reviews than ever before. You’ll see what I mean.
One More Thing . . .
Tomorrow I’ll be revealing something I’m very excited about, and then on Wednesday I’ll be publishing my general and incredibly hazy reading plan for the year as a whole. Until then, let me know what your own plans are. If you don’t have any, you’re welcome to join me with mine.
